Kumkum or Vermilion (Sindoor) has an important significance in Sanatan Hindu Dharma.
It is mainly used as as Tilak by all & specially as Sindoor by married women on their forehead.
What is exactly is Vermilion or Kuimkum?
Pure Vemilion or Kumkum is made from pure & natural turmeric and water of soda lime and small quantity of pure & natural camphor resulting in ice cold mixture dark red in colour rich in iron content with a divine scent.
Turmeric being an underground stem, the frequencies of earth is far greater than stems growing above the surface of soil.
When Turmeric and vermilion are offered to the deities the worshipper benfits fron the Postive frequencies of the earth in them as well as the divine energy absorbed by the vermilion from the God or Goddess Idol.
Consequently the Sattva attribute is enhanced in the person to very large extend who applies it on the body. At the same time the Persons abilty to tolerate Raja & Tama fequencies increases ..
The area in which the mark of the Kumkum is applied is between the eyebrows, called the “Ajna Chakra”. This is the point that Sanatan Hindu Dharma consider the entry and exit point of our jivaatma (soul). The tilak Sindoor or Bindi also represents our third eye (the spiritual eye) a concept closely related to Lord Shiva.
This Ajna Chakra area is area of concentration . It is also the area which gets heated during stress and tension. Applying the tilak has a cooling effect, aids concentration and signifies our eternal link with the Supreme Being, known as the Brahman (absolute). The tilak is thus a blessing of the Lord and a protection against wrong tendencies and forces.
The entire body emanates energy in the form of electromagnetic waves “ the forehead and the subtle spot between the eyebrows especially so. That is why worry generates heat and causes a headache. The tilak and pottu cools the forehead, protects us and prevents energy loss. Sometimes the entire forehead is covered with chandan or bhasma.
Using plastic reusable “stick bindis” is not at all beneficial but it also is bad as the glue used for it,is made up of very impure substances.
So using natural and simple home made kumkum or sandaal paste is best.

The tilaka is the vermilion mark of sindur , vermilion-red powder specially made out of turmeric and limejuice and other ingredients and called as kunkuma . This is sacred and used in daily worships and applied as a mark on forehead at a place where the Third Eye, j~naana netra is said to exist. For the women this mark is for their glorification of womanhood.
By application of Vermilion on the forehead negative energies are prevented from entering through the region middle of eyebrows (Brhumadhya) resulting in good fortune.(Sou Bhagya for the married women ) and enhances Spiritual power & Intellect in all . Sindoor should be applied right upto the pituitary gland where all our feelings are centered.
